Exhibitor Spotlight: Omaha Steak Company
Father and son, J.J. and B.A. Simon, arrived at Ellis Island from Riga, Latvia, boarded a train, and headed to what is now Omaha, NE. The Nebraska farmland reminded them of their home in Latvia and with that feeling, they started a new life in America’s Heartland. In 1917, they founded the Table Supply Meat company, a small-scale butcher shop. This new venture provided them with a unique opportunity to collaborate with several railroad food service companies and put their steaks in railroad train dining cars, creating nationwide exposure. Thirty-five years later, the company launched a mail order meal plan marketed through magazine ads and direct mail. After achieving global recognition, in 1966 the company officially became known as Omaha Steaks. Three years later the first retail store was opened in Omaha and now they have 70+ stores throughout the country.
